it would be neat if there were a database that classified songs by their chord progressions so that you could look up all songs that use a particular one.

Lookup: [Songs with the same chord progression as] Cascada - Any Song

loading...

Results:

  • Cascada - All songs

  • Groove Coverage - All songs

(I guess the results might be more interesting on anything else, huh?)

Would you mind if I swipe and implement it?

My brain currently thinks in db-driven webapps, so I see something along those lines.

Some sort of data entry system that lets you input a song, section by section/progression by progression and then a simple search that lets a progression be inputted (with a wildcard character to allow one to find (D* A, G) or something like that.

The main thing I am currently wondering about is how to handle chords that go one for multiple measures, as that does matter when one is looking for one of these things. My instinct is for it to matter in entering the song, but to be abstracted out of the search.

yes, and I wish the Redbox would let me search the movies by their runtime.

OR AT LEAST BY GENRE. jeez.

This actually seems rather wiki-appropriate, since human judgment would be useful to bin the borderline and approximate cases.

Human add/edit for the songs seems like it would make a lot of sense, but I don't see a wiki as being ideal for searchability.

Hmmm. I was conceptualizing this on a much more basic level, pretty much just inputting chord sequences and having those searched for within songs.

Actual harmonic analysis and determinations off vaguer criteria (ie key, chord progression types rather than specific chords) is an interesting idea.
