huh, i hadn't thought about it. first thing that comes to mind is how women "don't look like programmers" (or engineers or construction workers or..) to most people. the second thing is how women tend to anonymize/pseudonymize online, especially in women-unfriendly communities, meaning that when a community creator looks at their demographics, they're not likely to think of it as containing women... or, hey, when someone sees my name (sans picture) on a paper or list of students or speakers, any gender data they're collecting probably won't take me into account.
