i have been exposed to PL research in a limited way, both from reading what you and others write on the internet and also some this semester (and hopefully into the foreseeable future) with the PL lab at UMD.
"what PL wants" seems super squishy because i don't think there is any one thing that PL can want. i think you need to divide it before you can make bottom line distinctions like that. the clearest statement i have seen is "make software creation better", but 'better' is complicated. safer? easier? more accessible?
