for the first time in my life, i did something for father's day: i finally got round to scanning several of the items pertaining to my father that i received from my grandmother during my visit to arkansas two christmases ago.
i was born in may 1986, and my dad died in october of the same year.
this was my dad at (presumably) high school graduation; he never finished college:

the way i understand it, the context of his move to atlanta and subsequent death was financial. i was newly born and he had debts to pay. he had been working on a chemical engineering degree, and the good jobs were in atlanta. here's some primary source context, a letter he wrote to his grandmother whom he owed money:


this is his obituary, in the upper left:

the way my grandmother tells it, his superiors told him to jump down to fetch that hammer, a full story down from where they were working. they didn't tell him about the poor structural integrity of the flooring.
